Understanding Your Home's NBN Service Class

Understanding Your Home's NBN Service Class

Your service class indicates the state of readiness at your premises for NBN connectivity. It helps us (and you) understand what stage the installation is in and whether any additional work is required before your service can be activated.

Below you’ll find details on each service technology and its corresponding service classes. If you have any questions or need assistance determining your service class, please contact our support team.

NBN Service Classes

Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)

FTTP uses a fibre optic cable that goes directly to your property. The service classes for FTTP are as follows:

  • Service Class 0:
Your premises will be serviced by fibre in the future, but the local area is not yet fully connected.

  • Service Class 1:
Your location is capable of fibre connectivity; however, no NBN equipment has been installed at your premises yet. You can order a service, and we will arrange the necessary setup.

  • Service Class 2:
Your property has external fibre equipment in place, but internal connections still need to be installed. You can order a service, and we will arrange the necessary setup.

  • Service Class 3:
Your premises are fully equipped with both external and internal fibre devices. Once you order your service, activation typically occurs within 1–5 days.

Fixed Wireless (FW)

Fixed Wireless delivers NBN services using a wireless signal from a nearby tower. The service classes in this category are:

  • Service Class 4:
Your area is planned for Fixed Wireless service, but the necessary tower infrastructure is not yet operational.

  • Service Class 5:
Fixed Wireless service is now available in your area; however, no equipment has been installed at your premises. You can order a service, and we will arrange the necessary setup.

  • Service Class 6:
Your premises already have the Fixed Wireless antenna and connection device installed. After ordering your service, activation is usually completed within 1–5 days.

Fibre to the Node (FTTN)

FTTN connects your property to the network via a combination of fibre and existing copper lines. The service classes for FTTN are:

  • Service Class 10:
Your location is planned for FTTN connectivity but isn’t ready yet.

  • Service Class 11:
Your premises are almost ready for FTTN. The necessary copper wiring is in place, though some additional works (such as lead-in cabling to your home) may be required before full activation. Contact us to order your service.

  • Service Class 12:
Only minimal work (typically jumper cabling) is needed to complete the connection. This is generally completed at your local exchange or node; however, if you live within a complex, your community or building manager may be required to provide access to the communications cupboard. Contact us to order your service.

  • Service Class 13:
Your property is fully connected using copper technology, meaning all required work has been completed. Activation usually occurs within 1–5 days after ordering.

Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC)

HFC uses a mix of fibre and coaxial cable to deliver internet services. Here’s what each service class means for HFC:

  • Service Class 20:
Your premises is planned to be serviced by HFC, but the area isn’t ready yet.

  • Service Class 21:
The external cabling is in place, but additional work is needed to install the lead-in cabling before your property can be connected. You’re able to order a service and an installation appointment can be made.

  • Service Class 22:
Further installation work is required to fit the necessary network device and wall outlet. You’re able to order a service and an installation appointment can be made.

  • Service Class 23:
Although your property is mostly ready, some additional equipment installation may be needed. You can order a service, and a self-install kit will be sent if necessary.

  • Service Class 24:
Your premises are fully equipped with HFC technology. Once you order your service, activation will generally occur within 1–5 days.

Fibre to the Curb (FTTC)

FTTC combines copper and fibre by bringing fibre closer to your property before using copper for the final connection. The FTTC service classes include:

  • Service Class 30:
Your property will be serviced by FTTC in the future, but the area is not yet ready.

  • Service Class 31:
External wiring is in place, but additional lead-in cabling or minor installation work is needed. Contact us to order your service.

  • Service Class 32:
Your property is fully connected via FTTC, and all required equipment has been installed. Activation is generally swift, taking between 1–5 days following your service order.
