What speed do I need for streaming TV shows and movies?

Determining the right connection speed for your personal needs is important to avoid a frustrating experience with your internet.

NBN fixed-line connection types offer a range of connection speed options. 4G/5G wireless connections, however, do not. Wireless connection speeds cannot be guaranteed; these vary due to factors such as device capabilities, location, distance from the base station, local terrain and current user numbers. 4G services have typical download speeds ranging anywhere between 5 to 180Mbps.

For light internet use, like checking emails and browsing web pages with pictures and text, you'll need about 5-10Mbps per person. A 25Mbps plan should be sufficient for a two-person household to cover your basic needs.

If you use streaming services or make video calls, you'll need more speed, around 10-25Mbps per person. For a two-person household, this might mean choosing a 25Mbps or 50Mbps plan, depending on how often you use these services.

Remember, streaming high-definition video can consume around 3GB of data per hour. Along with your connection's speed, your download allowance is also important if you frequently stream.
