At MyHomeFone, we aim to make your NBN connection as simple and hassle-free as possible. That’s why all MyHomeFone NBN plans come with a pre-configured Wi-Fi modem router that is ready to plug in and use immediately. Using the modem router we provide allows us to offer complete end-to-end support for your service.
Want to Bring Your Own Modem Router?
You can choose to use your own (BYO) NBN-compatible modem router instead of ours. If you do, you’ll receive a one-time setup or connection fee discount. However, there are a few things to consider before deciding:
- Setup Can Be Technical: Configuring a BYO modem router to work with MyHomeFone NBN requires some technical know-how. If you’re not confident with technology, you may need help from someone who is.
- Limited Support: MyHomeFone offers full support for equipment we supply but only limited assistance for devices we don’t provide. This means troubleshooting issues with BYO equipment may take extra time and effort.
- Old Devices May Not Work Well: Modem routers typically need upgrading every 3 to 5 years to stay reliable and get the best out of your NBN service. Using older equipment may cause unexpected issues or slower speeds.
Before bringing your own modem router, consider whether the potential challenges are worth the discount.
Requirements for BYO Modem Routers
To work with MyHomeFone NBN, your modem router must be NBN compatible, not locked to a specific service provider and meet the following requirements:
- Support IPoE connections.
- For FTTN and FTTB connections, a VDSL-compatible modem is required.
- For FTTP, HFC, FTTC and Fixed Wireless connections, a WAN-enabled router is required.
Configuration Help
In this Support Portal, we occasionally publish step-by-step guides for setting up popular modem router models. However, as devices and interfaces are forever changing, we can’t guarantee the compatibility or reliability of this information, which is provided as a courtesy only.
Important Note
While we do our best to provide accurate and helpful information, we can’t take responsibility for any costs or issues caused by errors in the information provided.
By choosing to BYO, you’re in charge of your equipment. If you’re unsure, our team is here to help you decide whether bringing your own modem router is the right choice for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a username and password for my internet connection?
No, with MyHomeFone’s NBN internet service, you don’t need a username or password to get connected. The old days of dial-up, ADSL, or legacy NBN services requiring login details are over!
Our service uses a system called Internet Protocol over Ethernet (IPoE), which doesn’t require entering any login credentials. Your modem/router simply needs to support IPoE to connect seamlessly to the internet.
Can I use a modem or router I already own?
In most cases, you can use a modem or router you purchased elsewhere or from another internet provider with your MyHomeFone NBN service.
However, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- Some older devices might need extra configuration or may not work at all with NBN.
- Occasionally, certain internet providers lock their modems or routers to their services. If this applies to your equipment, you may need to contact your previous provider to unlock it.
